In accomplishing this objective we incorporate the best methods, knowledge and technologies that are available to us. We use IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices to monitor insects and diseases so that we can apply the appropriate control with the minimum amount of a pesticide that is required - at the right time to control the target. The goal of IPM is not to eradicate all insects and diseases, but to control to a level of damage that can be tolerated. Cultural practices such as pruning, cultivation and mowing are also used. Visual traps, bait traps, and pheromone traps are deployed for specific insects, and an on-site weather station that monitors temperature, humidity, leaf wetness and rainfall totals provides information about probable insect and disease development. We inspect our orchard and also use the services of an Entomologist to survey for beneficial as well as damaging insects, and developing disease. We are in contact with him on a weekly basis, more often when necessary. The result of this careful monitoring is that the minimum amount of a specific chemical applied at the right time to target a disease or a pest at the best possible time to control the amount of damage. A Women's Health Study of 40,000 U.S. women found that women who at one apple per day developed 22 percent less heart disease. A Nurses' Healthy study showed that daily apple consumption was linked to 37% lower risk of lung cancer. "Cloudy" apple cider, which has more solids, contains a higher amount of antioxidants than does clear cider or reconstituted apple concentrate.
